Daily Gratitude Practice: Why 5 Minutes a Day Can Change Your Life

Daily Gratitude Practice Why 5 Minutes a Day Can Change Your Life

Why Gratitude Matters

Life runs so fast, isn’t it? We get so busy in our daily routine that we forget. Let’s stop for a while and see how much love and support we have around us. I felt I needed to change something, so I started a small daily habit of gratitude. It was not about big gestures, it was just a way to feel those little magical moments that happen daily.

This is a page of my own journal a heartfelt gratitude to the universe and to all the people in my life. I am sharing this because I want you to experience the magic of your life too.

My First Gurus: Mummy and Papa

My first gurus were my Mummy and Papa. Before the world, we learn from our parents. They are our first teachers, first protectors and often the real architects of our happiness.

To My Dear Mummy

My heart is filled with gratitude for you. When I look back, I realise that the freedom you gave me allowed me to grow. You trusted me so much that you let me go to my uncle’s house during holidays and I used to enjoy so much there. You let me spend time with friends after school, sent me on school tours and even let me stay overnight at a friend’s house. This was not just permission, it was a message that you trust me.

You let me play with the neighbourhood kids, go to movies with friends and even gave me a chance to try new recipes even if I make a mess in the kitchen! Whenever you got me new clothes just for my smile or let me celebrate festivals like Holi with full fun and colours. I am thankful for all that from the bottom of my heart. You were my first guru, who taught me to pray for the first time and recite Hanuman Chalisa. For all these things and for many more thank you, thank you, thank you, Mummy. I love you very much.

For My Best Papa

You know what is going on in my heart, without me saying anything. This quality of yours is priceless. I am deeply thankful for the beautiful house that you built for us with so much hard work but my thanks are not just for the big things, even the small memories are the treasures of my life.

Do you remember when you used to take me to the circus? Or when you used to bring a VCR just for my happiness so that we both could watch our favourite movies together? You gifted me my first cycle, got me my favourite ice cream and your happiness was in my happiness.

Here are some cherished moments I’m grateful for:

  • Weekend trips you took us on
  • Your excitement to light crackers on Diwali
  • Cutting fruits with your own hands to feed us
  • Helping me clear my bank debts when I felt financially stressed

You let me go on mountain tours with friends, without any tension. You have always been my strength both my rock and rockstar. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Papa. I love you very much.

Reflecting on Your Pillars

Stop for a moment and think what are the pillars of your life? Remember a small memory of your parents or guardian that still brings a smile to your face. The magic lies somewhere there.

Gratitude for My Teachers and Mentors

I feel very lucky that at every turn of my life, the universe has sent some guru or the other along my path. These teachers, mentors and guides have lighted my journey and made my life even more beautiful because of them.

I am deeply thankful to all my teachers from my childhood to my current professors and instructors. Here are some special mentions:

  • Rhonda Byrne: For giving the world a life changing book like The Magic.
  • Arvind Munjal Sir: For explaining every concept with simplicity and beauty.
  • Sapna Mam: For teaching me to love myself through mirror work and to be grateful for five qualities.
  • Saila Mam: For her creative thinking and the power of a simple smile.
  • Jeetu Bhai Nayak: My drawing teacher who taught me to see the colours of life.
  • Ashmeen Mam: For her health care sessions that taught me to feel gratitude for every body part.

Every mentor taught me something important. Arvind Sir explained the real and deep meaning of the words Thank You. Mummy taught me to pray. All of these gave me a new way to live life, a new awareness.

Thank you to all the volunteers of Gratitude Foundation and all the teachers who guided me at any time may God bless all of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Reflect on Your Mentors

Take some time think about a teacher or mentor (it can be anyone friend, boss, author) who taught you an important lesson. How did that one lesson change you? That is where the magic happens.

How to Start Your Gratitude Practice

My daily goal is simple to live every day with the feeling of gratitude. If you want to start, there is no need to complicate it. It is very easy, you just need a little intention.

Here’s how to begin:

  • Find a Quiet Moment: As soon as you wake up in the morning or at night before going to sleep, just for a few minutes.
  • Be Specific: Don’t just think I am thankful for my family. Go deeper like I am thankful that my sister called me today, or Today’s lunch was very tasty, thank you for that. When we are specific, we feel more grateful.
  • Say the Magic Words: Whether in writing, in your heart or in a soft voice end with a heartfelt Thank you. Feel the emotion behind it.

Thank you, Prabhu. Thank you, Hanuman Ji. Thank you, Universe for this beautiful outcome in which my days were filled with gratitude.

The Transformative Power of Gratitude

This small practice has changed my entire life. It makes even normal days magical. I hope that after hearing my journey, you too would have got the inspiration to start your own journey.Thank you, thank you, thank you.
